Richard Liu Qiangdong is the founder of JD.com, one of the largest online retailers in China. He started the company in 1998 with just $500 in capital. In 2014, JD.com became the first Chinese company listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange.

Richard Liu was born in Suqian, Jiangsu Province of China. He was raised in a low-income family and had to drop out early to support his family. When he was just 18 years old, Liu started his first business selling magneto-optical products. This business quickly failed, and Liu was left with heavy debt. Despite this setback, Liu did not give up on his entrepreneurial dreams.

In 1998, Liu Qiangdong started Jingdong (now JD.com) with just $500 in the capital. Jingdong was originally a brick-and-mortar electronics store in Beijing. By 2014, JD.com had become the largest online retailer in China and was listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange.

Richard Liu pursued a degree in sociology at the Renmin University of China, one of China’s leading universities. Under Liu’s leadership, JD.com has become one of the most successful companies in China. It is now worth over $50 billion and has over 300 million active users.
