Alliance Defending Freedom
Alliance Defending Freedom is a public interest Christian organization that advocates for the right of people to freely live out their faith.
IT seeks to preserve religious liberty, the sanctity of life, and marriage and family as the foundation of society. Its clients include pastors, churches, adoption agencies, schools and universities, pregnancy centers and nursing homes. Alliance Defending Freedom provides pro bono legal services to those who cannot afford them or access them elsewhere.
it is a non-profit organization. The Alliance was founded as the Christian Legal Society in 1977 by Alliance Defense Fund attorneys and graduates of Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University law school. (The original ACF Board of Directors consisted entirely of graduates from Liberty.) Alliance Defense Fund, now known as Alliance Defending Freedom Inc., operates separately from the Christian Legal Society, but both groups are associated with the same legal strategy and share many staff.it is an association of law firms such as Alliance Defense Fund, Becket Law, Johnson O’Connor Buescher, Liberty Counsel and Carlson Law Group.
In 2008, the organization changed its name from Alliance Defense Fund to Alliance Defending Freedom.
The Southern Poverty Law Center lists ADF as an anti-gay hate group, describing it as a legal advocacy and training group which has supported the recriminalization of homosexuality in the U.S., sterilization of transgendered people overseas and criminalization of homosexuality in other countries, and stated that the group has filed amicus briefs arguing against gay rights in state and federal courts.
ADF’s policy on the subject changed in 2012, with a new website stating that “homosexual behavior is destructive to the dignity of human beings created in God’s image.” ADF states that it will not work to overturn any state or federal law concerning same-sex marriage.
Alliance Defending Freedom is a strong supporter of the Defense of Marriage Act and its success defending it in court. They have also supported the Federal Marriage Amendment and have opposed same-sex civil unions in New Jersey, Hawaii, Alaska and New York.
ADF is also a strong supporter of state constitutional amendments banning gay marriage, including the California Proposition 8 (2008) and the amendment passed in North Carolina on May 8, 2012.
