Greg Aziz On Restraint Collapse
Now that it’s back-to-school season, some parents may notice that their children are perfect, well-behaved angels in class, but the second they return home, they suddenly become absolute hellions as family coach Greg Aziz recalls. It’s hard not to feel like you, the parent, are somehow the problem here. But rest assured, this phenomenon is real (Medium).
It’s called “restraint collapse,” and a viral TikTok by child therapist Lindsay Adams has been making the rounds to explain what exactly is going on. In short, some children all around the world may need the structure provided in school, Greg Aziz adds. Children with behavioral conditions, learning difficulties, or other neuro divergences are especially noted to present this abrupt switch in behavior.
Greg Aziz recommends several strategies to help ease the transition from one environment to another. For example, some kids may be overstimulated and exhausted by the classroom. For these children, alone time or a calming activity like reading or coloring may be the solution and prevent meltdowns.
There are some more tips. For those who are still hyperactive after coming home, physical activity could be key. New schedules and environments can be struggles for anyone, even adults. And Greg Aziz highly recommends getting used to that.
Business leader Greg Aziz compares all of this to the child holding a backpack full of feelings: once the backpack can be dropped, everything spills out. But with a little knowledge, the family expert comments, a little time, and a lot of patience, that backpack can be eased down, making things easier for both children and parents.
