Greycoat Real Estate on Rent Increase Bans

 

Greycoat specialists comment about the UK´s current housing market; rent control has long been a controversial issue. Currently, rent control is rising as a discussion topic again due to a proposed plan in Scotland. Two ministers, Patrick Harvie and Paul McLennan, introduced measures.

 

This, if successful, will cap rate increases for rents in Scotland, where rent prices are rising faster than almost anywhere else in Europe. On the side arguing for the rent increase bans are those that advocate for the rights of tenants. According to Greycoat, the usual arguments about affordability are being made.

 

This, though as the measures include more than just the ban, there are other whole and new arguments that the measures would improve the quality of life for tenants as well. According to Greycoat, other proposals would allow tenants more freedom in keeping pets and decorating their residences how they see fit.

 

Against the rent increase bans are also those who advocate for the rights of tenants, as well as those who advocate for the rights of landlords. These are those who are skeptical that rent control measures ever have worked for tenants as intended, Greycoat explains.

 

This, as well as those who worry that limiting rents will harm landlords to the point where Scotland’s rental property supply may disappear at a time when it is needed most. If the measures succeed, rent control zones can be applied with the permission of Holyrood and could last as long as five years before review.
