Hassan Jameel Leads Digital Transformation at Saudi Arabia’s Abdul Latif Jameel
Abdul Latif Jameel, one of Saudi Arabia’s largest independent businesses, is undergoing a significant digital transformation under the leadership of Hassan Jameel, who serves as Deputy President and Vice Chairman for the company’s Saudi operations.
The initiative reflects the growing trend among traditional businesses to adapt to the digital age, with ALJ embracing data-centric approaches to enhance customer experience and operational efficiency across its diverse portfolio.
“With a passion for entrepreneurship and innovation, Hassan Jameel has been a driving force behind Abdul Latif Jameel’s digitalization,” said a company spokesperson. “This process has transformed the way the business interacts with its guests and partners.”
A key element of this digital strategy has been the development of Motory.com, which has grown to become one of Saudi Arabia’s most-visited automotive websites. The platform exemplifies ALJ’s approach to digital innovation, providing an online marketplace for its core automotive business while expanding digital services across other sectors.
Mr. Jameel, who oversees operations in mobility, land and real estate, and machinery for the family-owned business, has emphasized the importance of balancing digital innovation with the company’s traditional operational strengths.
“We’re in brick-and-mortar businesses. We’re in distribution, logistics, real estate, services, and heavy operations,” he noted in a recent interview. “The challenge is incorporating digital approaches while maintaining our operational excellence.”
Industry analysts highlight that ALJ’s digital transformation strategy differs from many tech startups by focusing on enhancing existing business lines rather than disrupting them. This approach leverages the company’s deep industry knowledge while embracing new technologies.
The digitalization initiative comes as Saudi Arabia pursues its Vision 2030 economic diversification plan, which includes significant digital transformation goals across both public and private sectors. ALJ’s efforts align with this national direction while addressing changing consumer expectations.
Mr. Jameel’s educational background, which includes a Bachelor of Arts in International Economics from Sophia University in Tokyo and an MBA from the London Business School, has influenced his approach to modernizing the family business while respecting its heritage.
Prior to taking his current role, he worked at Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan, where he gained insights into how established companies can innovate while maintaining operational discipline.
Founded in 1945 by Hassan’s grandfather as a single gas station in Jeddah, Abdul Latif Jameel has grown into a global investor and diversified business with operations spanning more than 30 countries across six continents, employing over 11,000 people of 65 nationalities.
The company’s digital transformation reflects its evolution as what Mr. Jameel has described as a “75-year-old startup,” balancing established expertise with entrepreneurial agility to address changing market conditions while maintaining its commitment to long-term value creation.
