The Battle for Rights: A Deep Dive into Alliance Defending Freedom’s History

Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is a prominent legal organization dedicated to safeguarding
religious freedom, free speech, marriage and family, parental rights, and the
sanctity of life. Founded in 1994, ADF has become the world’s largest
organization focused on defending these fundamental values. Although rooted in
Christian principles, ADF’s mission extends to people of all faiths and
backgrounds, advocating for the preservation of constitutional rights for all Americans.

At the core of ADF’s work is the belief that religious freedom is essential to human dignity.
A notable case that exemplifies this principle is Arlene’s Flowers v. State of
Washington. In this case, Alliance Defending Freedom
defended a floral artist who declined to create a floral arrangement for a
same-sex wedding due to her religious beliefs. ADF argued that the government
should not compel individuals to act against their deeply held convictions. A
similar case involving a graphic designer in Colorado, who expressed her right
to follow her beliefs about marriage, is currently on ADF’s docket.

Alliance Defending Freedom’s impact extends beyond individual cases, as they have been
instrumental in securing victories at the Supreme Court. To date, ADF has been
directly involved in 14 Supreme Court victories and has participated in 72
overall. These victories have protected the rights of family-owned businesses,
town councils, and individuals to freely exercise their beliefs without fear of
government punishment.

Moreover, ADF has garnered recognition from renowned institutions worldwide. ADF International,
an affiliate, holds accreditation from the UN Economic and Social Council, the
European Parliament and Commission, and the Organization of American States. Additionally,
ADF has established relationships with the Organization for Security and
Co-operation in Europe and has participatory status with the EU’s Agency for
Fundamental Rights.

ADF’s notable cases include Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights
Commission
, where they defended a cake artist’s right to operate his business according to his
beliefs. In Uruguay v. Preczewsk, ADF successfully protected a student’s
freedom of speech rights on a college campus. In the National Institute of
Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA) v. Becerra case, ADF secured a victory
protecting pro-life pregnancy centers’ rights to not provide information about
abortion. Trinity Lutheran v. Comer is yet another landmark case where ADF
advocated for equal treatment of religious institutions in accessing public benefits.

Alliance Defending Freedom continues to champion the principles enshrined in the Constitution,
standing up for Americans’ rights regardless of the prevailing political
climate. Through their unwavering commitment, ADF is making a substantial
impact in defending religious freedom and protecting Constitutional rights for
all. Refer to this page for additional information.
