The Role Of Alliance Defending Freedom In Protecting Religious Freedom
One of the areas the Alliance Defending Freedom focuses on is protecting the religious freedom of anyone, whether they subscribe to a form of faith or not. Everyone has the right to explore the mystery of life in their own way. In the same light, people should be allowed to explore their religious convictions privately and publicly. A free society tolerates and lets everyone express themselves how they want. This is regardless of whether you agree or disagree with their viewpoints.
How the ADF Is Protecting Religious Freedom
For the longest time, religious freedom issues in the US mainly focused on protecting certain minority religious groups. Today, the government is legislating certain laws that violate certain principles of Jewish, Islamic, and Christian faith. Alliance Defending Freedom strongly believes marriage involves one woman and one man and that sex is binary. As such, they sometimes represent individuals who share the same beliefs and are being ostracized or punished for their views on such matters.
Case in Point
One of the cases ADF represented involved Barronelle Stutzman, owner of Arlene’s Flowers. The government punished the floral artist because she didn’t want to do a floral arrangement for a same-sex wedding. Understandably, people have different views of the subject, which always brings strong arguments when the topic arises.
That said, just like everyone has the right to have an opinion on the issues, so does the artist. She shouldn’t be punished for refusing to make a creation she feels doesn’t align with her beliefs. The government shouldn’t be the one deciding something like that for you. ADF stepped in and represented Stutzman in the case.
The Alliance Defending Freedom believes that everyone should work and live according to their beliefs without fearing discrimination or hostility from the government. Everyone should be allowed to decide the kind of art they want to create and the messages to speak. That’s the only way to truly experience religious freedom.
