During his coaching tenure in Germany, he achieved three consecutive national championships with his University of Mannheim basketball team as head coach.

Hufnagel’s courtship to coaching began in the United States. He started college coaching at 26, taking charge of a Creighton University men’s basketball team in Omaha, Nebraska. He worked there for four years. In 1983 he joined the University of Nebraska Omaha staff and stayed with them until 1985. In 1986, he joined the team at the University of Missouri and remained there for three years.
