Michael Polk Applies Newell Lessons at Implus

Running a company with more than 50,000 employees prepares a leader for plenty, but it doesn’t necessarily prepare them for what it takes to run a small, privately held business. Michael Polk Newell Brands has learned that firsthand since taking over as CEO of Implus LLC in 2020.

Lessons Carried From Newell

Before Implus LLC, Michael Polk spent eight years as CEO of Newell Brands, a public company where he was tasked with turning a sprawling holding structure into a single, functioning operating company. The job required him to answer to a board of directors and shareholders while managing a massive global workforce spread across dozens of brands.

That experience, paired with earlier stints at Procter & Gamble, Kraft Foods and Unilever, gave Polk a deep understanding of how large organizations build talent over time. Big companies, he has noted, tend to develop leaders slowly and deliberately, giving employees years to grow into bigger roles.

Implus operates on a different clock. Berkshire Partners recruited Polk to lead the fitness accessories company after he briefly stepped away from corporate life following his Newell Brands exit. He found that smaller companies push people, including junior staff, into major decisions much sooner than a company like Newell ever would.

Rather than treating that as a drawback, Polk has embraced it. He now describes his senior team members as player coaches, offering hands-on guidance to employees who are learning by doing rather than through years of structured development programs.

The accountability hasn’t disappeared. Polk still answers to a board and to company owners, much as he did at Newell, and he continues to measure his success by the value he helps create. What has changed is his proximity to the work itself, something he says has made this stretch of his career among the most fulfilling yet.

Michael Polk continues to apply lessons from his Newell years while adapting them to the faster, closer style of leadership that Implus demands. Read this article for additional information.
