Justin Fulcher’s Push for Coding Education in South Carolina

After stepping back from day-to-day involvement with RingMD, Justin Fulcher turned his attention toward education in his home state. In 2023, he co-founded the Palmetto Initiative, a workforce development program aimed at bringing programming instruction into South Carolina’s public schools statewide, from small rural districts to much larger city systems near the coast.

The idea grew out of a visit to Allendale, South Carolina, where Fulcher met a student named Maya who wanted to become a software engineer but attended a school that lacked the resources to support that ambition in any meaningful or lasting way whatsoever.

A STORY FULCHER SAYS ISN’T RARE

Fulcher later wrote that Maya’s situation was not unique, describing it as a story shared by many children across the state who have real interest and aptitude but lack access to the tools that might let them build a career in technology someday soon in their own communities.

The initiative reflects a throughline in Justin Fulcher’s own biography. He taught himself to code as a young child and built a business as a teenager well before he ever set foot in Southeast Asia, and the Palmetto Initiative attempts to make that kind of early access available to far more students than had it before his own childhood.

It also marked a shift in focus for Justin Fulcher, from healthcare access, the problem he spent a decade solving through RingMD, to educational access, a related gap he encountered much closer to home in his own home state of South Carolina years later.

Fulcher has described the Palmetto Initiative as unfinished work, the kind of project he expects to keep shaping for years rather than something with a defined endpoint or finish line. He has said meeting Maya reminded him of his own childhood, when access to a computer and a little encouragement was enough to set him on a path that eventually led halfway around the world.
