Kelcy Warren and Ray Davis Built an Energy Powerhouse
Every successful company has an origin story, and for Energy Transfer, much of it centers on the partnership between Kelcy Warren and Ray C. Davis. The two met while Warren was searching for a buyer of the struggling pipeline company Endevco, and instead of finding an outside investor, they became partners themselves, along with Ben Cook.
Two Different Strengths
The trio bought Endevco, rebranded it and sold it at a profit, using the proceeds to launch Energy Transfer in 1996 with roughly 200 miles of East Texas natural gas pipelines. From the start, the partnership divided naturally. Davis, who later purchased the Texas Rangers baseball team, concentrated on the business fundamentals, while Kelcy Warren focused on the bigger picture, imagining a network of pipelines and export hubs stretching across the continent.
Davis described his longtime partner in blunt terms during a previous interview with the Houston Chronicle. “Kelcy doesn’t think like other people. He sees possibilities where others don’t,” he said. That contrast between operational discipline and long range vision helped the company survive its early years and take advantage of opportunities when they appeared.
From Gas Lines to a National Network
The Enron collapse in the early 2000s offered one of the clearest tests of that partnership, as distressed pipeline assets flooded the market and Energy Transfer moved to acquire them. Kelcy Warren has credited a combination of luck and timing for much of the company’s early growth, but the working relationship with Davis gave Energy Transfer the stability to act decisively when the market shifted.
Davis has since stepped back from day to day involvement, but the foundation the two built together still underpins Energy Transfer’s approach. Warren remains executive chairman, still expanding the company his old partner helped launch with a modest stretch of East Texas pipeline nearly thirty years ago.
