Alliance Defending Freedom Represents Jack Phillips
Jack Phillips is the owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop. He first made headlines a few years ago when he refused to bake a cake for a gay wedding because of his religious beliefs. He made headlines again when he did not want to make a cake that symbolized someone’s transition from male to female. The customer sued him as a result.
The Colorado Court of Appeals stated that Jack would have to make cakes that violated his religious beliefs. Fortunately, the Alliance Defending Freedom was there to take on the case.
The attorneys cited The Supreme Court Case Creatine V. Elenis. This was a case that stated everyone has the right to free speech.
Attorneys for the Alliance Defending Freedom stated that Colorado activists and officials have misused the state laws to punish Jack for his beliefs. Jack Warner is a senior counsel for the Alliance Defending Freedom. He stated that everyone is entitled to free speech. He also stated that the cake that Jack Phillips was asked to bake falls under the category of free speech. Additionally, Jack Warner stated that no one should be forced to do things that violate their beliefs.
The same day that Jack Phillips was told that he did not have to make a gay wedding cake, he received a call from an activist asking him to make a gender transition cake. Another person called him and told him that he should make a cake that showed Satan smoking marijuana.
An attorney stated that Jack was going to be harassed until he complied. Jack Warner stated that Jack Phillips does not discriminate against people. However, he will not make a cake with a message that goes against his beliefs. The Alliance Defending Freedom was able to get the Colorado Supreme Court to take on the case back in October 2023.
