Saudi Business Giant Abdul Latif Jameel Expands Japanese Presence with New Tokyo Office

Saudi Arabian business conglomerate Abdul Latif Jameel (ALJ) has strengthened its foothold in Japan with the relocation of its Jameel Corporation office to Tokyo Midtown Yaesu, in the heart of the capital’s business district.

The strategic move coincides with the company’s nearly 30-year presence in Japan and signals its intent to expand collaboration with existing and new business partners in the country.

At the opening ceremony, Hassan Jameel, Deputy President and Vice Chairman of Abdul Latif Jameel, was joined by senior executives from Toyota Motor Corporation and other Japanese business leaders, underscoring the importance of the company’s ties with Japan.

“This new office marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to the Japanese market,” said Mr. Jameel at the event. “Our nearly three-decade presence in Japan has been pivotal to our global growth strategy.”

Jameel Corporation, established in Japan in 1996, has played a significant role in exporting Toyota vehicles to the Middle East and North Africa. In 2005, it became the only foreign-funded Lexus dealership in Japan, following Toyota’s launch of its Lexus sales network in the country.

The relationship between ALJ and Japan runs deep. Hassan Jameel, who leads the domestic operations of Abdul Latif Jameel in Saudi Arabia, trained in Japan earlier in his career and speaks Japanese fluently. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Economics from Sophia University in Tokyo, demonstrating the family’s longstanding connection to the country.

“Japan has been instrumental in shaping our business philosophy,” Mr. Jameel noted in a previous interview. “We’ve embraced the Toyota way and Japanese business practices like kaizen [continuous improvement] and genchi genbutsu [go and see for yourself].”

Founded in 1945 by Hassan’s grandfather with a single gas station in Jeddah, ALJ has grown into a global investor and diversified business operating in more than 30 countries across six continents. The company employs over 11,000 people of 65 nationalities.

Under Hassan Jameel’s leadership, ALJ has expanded beyond its core automotive distribution business into renewable energy, real estate, financial services, and other sectors. The company has maintained its status as one of Toyota’s largest independent distributors worldwide, with ALJ Motors recently winning the Gold Award in Toyota’s Distributor Award Program for the 13th consecutive year.

The new Tokyo office aims to foster further collaboration between Japan and global markets, particularly introducing innovative Japanese products and services to the Middle East and beyond.
